Researchers at two universities wanted to review this earlier finding. They found that the opposite is the case: moderate alcohol consumption does not protect against cardiovascular disease and even increases the risk of suffering a stroke. Their study, for which they analyzed data from 500,000 people, appeared.

The best for the psyche: no alcohol at all

As far as mental health is concerned, of course, we know that high alcohol consumption hurts the brain and psyche. However, it has been unclear how moderate alcohol consumption affects psychological wellbeing and whether it might be better to renounce alcohol altogether.

In the study above, researchers found that adults, especially women, experienced a significant improvement in their mental wellbeing when they completely stopped drinking alcohol.

Best wellbeing in people who never drink alcohol

The study participants were either people who never drank alcohol or consumed alcohol only moderately. For men, moderate meant a maximum of 14 alcoholic drinks a week with a total of 196 g alcohol and for women a maximum of half a week, i.e., seven alcoholic drinks.tockhop


For example, a 150 ml glass of wine already contains 14 g of alcohol, a daily ratio for women and half a daily quota for men.

Initially, it was found that those participants who never had drunk alcohol had the best mental health. Also, mental wellbeing improved dramatically in those who had given up drinking.

So, one should be very careful with the general recommendation that small amounts of alcohol are part of a healthy diet, advises the study author. However, it is better not to drink alcohol at all.
