It is often said that cooked fruits and vegetables are much better because they are easier to digest. For the psyche, however, raw fruits and vegetables are much better,

Raw fruits and vegetables: healthier for the psyche

Researchers at the University found that raw fruits and vegetables appear to be better for mental health than cooked, canned, or otherwise processed fruits and vegetables.

"In the typical official campaigns of the health authorities, only the amount of fruit and vegetables to be consumed daily is indicated, for example, five fruit and vegetable servings per day, but not whether the fruits and vegetables should be eaten raw or cooked."

The form of preparation is decisive

Conner's study, which was published in Frontiers in Psychology, showed that it is not only how much fruits and vegetables you eat that are crucial for your health, but also in what form you eat them, i.e., how they are prepared.

"With our research, we were able to clearly show that the consumption of unprocessed fruits and vegetables is associated with significantly better mental health - compared to the consumption of cooked, canned, or otherwise processed fruits and vegetables," explained Conner.

Cooking reduces the vital substance content

The psychologist sees that cooking and processing reduce the vital substance content of fruits and vegetables too much. However, vital substances are essential for optimal mental health and a stable psyche.

Seven hundred young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 took part in the study. They came from New Zealand, the USA, and some other countries. This age group was chosen because of all age groups, young adults eat the least amount of fruit and vegetables and at the same time have a high risk of developing a mental disorder.

It was now investigated how much fruit and vegetables the test subjects generally eat, what form they do this (cooked, from cans, or the like), and their mental health. Of course, other factors that could also affect mental health were ruled out, such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep hygiene, unhealthy diet, chronic diseases, etc.

More raw food - less depression

The result was astonishing: symptoms of mental disorders such as depression occurred less often in those who ate many raw vegetables. These young people were in a good mood, festive, and satisfied with their lives. All of this was significantly reduced among the cooked food eaters.

The top 10 raw fruits and vegetables linked to better mental health in the above study were:

·        Carrots

·        Bananas

·        Apples

·        dark green leafy vegetables, like spinach

·        Grapefruit

·        other citrus fruits

·        salad

·        fresh berries

·        Cucumbers

·        Kiwi fruit

"Our research results are significant, as the right diet or other lifestyle factors are safe and easy-to-use measures to improve mental health."

The consumption rules for raw food - so that raw food is compatible

If you have problems digesting raw food, pay attention to the correct consumption rules that make raw food easier to digest:

Ø  Always eat raw vegetables before cooking, neither with nor after.

Ø  Eat fruit by yourself on an empty stomach.

Ø  Chew raw vegetables thoroughly and eat them very slowly.

Ø  Drink raw drinkable foods such as smoothies very slowly and salivate well before swallowing.

Ø  Do not mix too many raw vegetables; two or three varieties in a salad are entirely sufficient for a sensitive digestive system.

Ø  Do not drink anything with raw vegetables; better keep a distance of 1 hour.

Ø  Eat raw vegetables in the morning until the early afternoon, preferably not in the evening, as a weak digestive system can then no longer digest the raw vegetables as well, and they find it challenging to lie in the gastrointestinal tract.

Ø  Remember that a digestive system that is not used to raw foods will take time to adapt. With the rules mentioned here, it works much easier!
